Everything Freya Blackwood does is just fabulous. Her illustrations are lovingly drawn.
This is a beautiful story of life and death told using the allegory of a tiny star falling to earth. Mem Fox's words are carefully chosen and the pictures are a glorious and vibrant celebration of a life well lived. It's what this story doesn't overtly say that makes it magical.
In a poignant moment, having just lost his Grandma a few weeks ago, my eight year old told his older brother - 'don't worry, Grandma is now a star looking down at us from the sky'.
I hadn't realised that he had read the book himself before we had read it together. When a picture book gives comfort like that, you know it is just brilliant.
